Terra Nova Renewal: Season 2 Prospects Looking Good

For those of us who are dearly wishing to see a Season 2 for Terra Nova, things are looking up!

First off,  the buzz is that Fox is actively seeking to secure Terra Nova, creatively: the options for key cast members (Jason O’Mara and Stephen Lang) were picked up. Holding an actor’s option does not necessarily mean the studio will renew the show, but it does mean that the network is not gung-ho to cancel it, either. Additionally, Fox is rumored to be hunting for new writers–and we all know that this is a good thing. Now, let’s see if they can lighten up the executive producer list, which should produce a more cohesive show overall.

Secondly, the TCA (Television Critics Association) met for its bi-yearly roundup over the weekend, and, according to Ken Reilly, Fox’s chief exec, “”I do feel fortunate that we have some high-class problems” (in having to decide whether to keep or cancel shows such as Glee, House, and Terra Nova). “(Terra Nova) was an exciting bet to take and I think it has proven that it was worthwhile.”

When challenged about the massive costs in producing Terra Nova, Reilly responded by saying that Fox has, indeed, made money off Terra Nova–a major factor in deciding to keep a show on or not. Several excellent shows have been cancelled due to not making enough money–Firefly comes to mind; Fringe is currently on the verge of cancellation, since Fox is losing lots of money on that show…and Reilly is a self-proclaimed “Fringe fanatic.” Lamentably, shows have to make money to stick around, and since Terra Nova has earned its keep, let’s hope Fox sticks with it and allows the show to grow and develop in a second season.

Still, despite stating that Terra Nova had some creative issues, Reilly indicated that he was mostly happy with it: “If the show hadn’t worked, I still wouldn’t be apologizing,” he said. “I wish it was creatively more consistent this year but I don’t have a lot of regrets about it.”

He acknowledged that the long list of executive producers and numerous executive changes made Terra Nova a “bit of a challenge” and gave the perception that the show “got away from us.” Regardless, “The bar was sent enormously high and if this is all we produce, we made money, the studio made money, the audience enjoyed it … it’s clearly a concept that people wanted to watch.”

Ken ReillyReferring to its viewership, he commented that there was a definite audience that “stuck with it,”, especially families that enjoy watching it together (this author’s family is included in that group). Reilly continued, “There’s a show there to bring back; there’s an audience for it to service.”

Ultimately, Reilly did not make any promises, though: “If we had more holes, we’d be thrilled to lock [Terra Nova] in,” he said. “Right now we’re looking at everything: new shows premiering, development, we’ll decide very soon. It needs to get back into production next month. We won’t be able to drag our feet on it for too long.”

Thirdly, Terra Nova came in on top of the December 19-25, 2011 DVR rankings in the 18-49 age demographic, gaining a .9 ratings point jump in that age range, which is key. Terra Nova also captured the top spots in the ratings increase in DVR watching in the 18-49 demographic for that week, as well as the Live+Same Day and Live+ 7-day measurements. Finally, Terra Nova added another 2.237 million watchers by DVR! What does all this mean? That all those people who recorded Terra Nova were either watching it for the first time or watching it again than any other show that week–and both of these things are positives for the show.

So, people, let’s cross our fingers and hope that the powers that be decide that Terra Nova is worth the while! I think season 2 has excellent potential…and I want to know what is the deal with the ship’s figurehead!!

Updated February 14th, 2012:  Still No news on Terra Nova’s Season 2.  But FOX announces that the current season of House will be the last.  This potentially opens up a spot for either Alcatraz or Terra Nova or a New Drama or Two New Comedies.

Despite a stronger premiere than Terra Nova, Alcatraz has now fallen to a 1.9 rating in the key demo for it’s 6th episode.  Terra Nova’s season lowest was a 2.1 rating.  See this thread on our forums where fans have began whipping out the graphs.

    I don’t watch Fringe much. However, I have stopped watching House. To me that show has lost to much in order to keep my interest.

    I do really enjoy Terra Nova. I found as they continued to develop the characters during the first you began to really enjoy the series. Personally I really would like to see a second full season.

      I too stopped watching House years ago. Terra Nova is time spent with my family. Me my wife and all three of our children love the show.

    Although the first season could have been a bit better as pointed out, there is a lot that can be done with this show and look forward to a second season and more. IMHO shows like Fringe and House do well for a couple of seasons then something gets into the heads of the writers and the shows get weard and I for one lose all interest. Fox is not the only network with writers that go brain dead. They seem to believe like big screen writers that shows are made to exercise their creative minds and not to please the audience. Tera Nova is as pointed out, is a show that the whole family can watch so I hope they can take the show to interesting places and keep it that way.

    They would have a better following if they advertised more and removed it from such a compettive slot, but that is idiots in the lineup decisions fault. For ythe first 6 episodes. I issed because of work, sports crap or something else the someone else wished to watch.

        TERRA NOVA!  I don’t typically watch sci-fi but it’s got me hooked! They’d be raving mad to cancel it! It probably even has merchandising opportunities whereas other series’ don’t!

        He said it profited and I think it’s the type of show that earns more in the long run! I didn’t even know about it till it was done airing and now I’m a fan!

        Heck set up a “donate to save terra nova” paypal on their website and I’d chip in $20-30 bucks!

        Fringe is losing money though, they’ve said that a couple times.

        They’ve canceled House, but I doubt Glee will be canceled because for some insanely odd reason it’s popular. 

        TN should definitely stay, it made money, increased it’s audience and now there’s 2 openings.

        I think the first couple of seasons of Fringe were good then it got ridiculous with having everyone play their character from an alternate world. Come on the show was way better before that started, that’s when I stopped watching.

          Frankly, I think that Fringe is the best show on TV. It is solid entertainment. It has gotten increasingly better with each season even as it has made me scratch my head in disbelief from time to time. It’s far more interesting now than it was the first season when it was just a sterile X Files clone (if you listen closely you can even hear the X Files theme music in the background of the first few episodes of Fringe). The character’s alternates have made the show infinitely more mysterious and provocative. We get to see an alternate world that is almost entirely different from our own, with minor and major differences in technology, history, culture, and society. And we get to see the alternate’s reactions as well to many of the strange situations and problems that have arisen. Then there are the Observers. They have taken on greater roles as well. They’ve become more intertwined with the plot and storyline so that we really want to learn who and what they are. What makes them tick? How can they see and be in all timelines? What is their purpose? How do they decide to help or hinder humanity?  Are they the masters or are they merely puppets following orders? Certainly, the Fringe story wouldn’t have been possible without one of them, specifically September, making a decision that changed the lives of the inhabitants of two worlds. I’m more hooked and curious than ever! But I guess those without imaginations wouldn’t know anything about that … .

    Terra Nova is an awesome show a totally family show that everyone can sit down and watch. Too much emphasis nowadays on murder slashing and killing. House we used to love House but now it is really boring when they changed everyone around. Please renew Terra Nova!!!!

    The ending of season 1 made it seem pretty clear as to what the Bad Lands are. It is the future Burmuda Triangle.

      Every time I find a show that is fun to watch, and makes me want tot see what’s around the corner, some knuckle head wants to cancel. I’ve gotten to the point, that if I like something, I just keep my mouth shout!!! (but here’s hoping it goes on……shhhh).

     Certainly is alot that could be done, the obvious direction is that they have found where all the lost ships from the bermuda triangle have gone. Why have the bad guys gone north to the bad lands, because there is a civilization there from all the ship wrecked sailors etc.. .
     You then can do stuff from HBeam piper in season 2 after you fight the bad guys at the bad lands and win or not?? :) . With temperol time police watching out for shifts in alternate realities, come to the rescue or are they badies acting like goodies. Thats for later like season 3 say.
     You can be smart and have the main characters fight it out vs alternate reality time bandits as a season 4/5 and if the writers have some brains and write well, you could have a great series.
     Sadly I don’t hold out much hope.

    Hopefully they bring it back, and if they decided to drop it, i’m hoping another network jumps at it.  the potential is awesome, honestly the biggest plunders in the show to me is the casting of the two sons, both Landon Liboiron and Ashley Zukerman just don’t seem to fit their characters

    Season 2 please! The bad lands, I agree as a drop of point for the Bermuda triangle which would be from their future millions of years ahead of the time line also. What about the people that surrvied the time alteration, cargo from the centuries that are missing, hence they should find airplanes. Which opens a whole new possibility of explorations ( maybe they built the pyramids) So many choices, so much potential.

    Love the show but I guess like all good shows they will be replaced but something that is really stupid by murder, gangrapes etc.  Please bring back, if not I will just have to watch all of the epsoides I recorded and am glad I did.

    i really enjoy terra nova. and all of my friends i have showed the show to watched every episode. we definetly want to see a season 2. im 19 by the way def in that age range.

      I would love season two to happen. I felt it was really well written. I really miss watching it. I would think that a show like house although good but getting old would be a good replacement.

    WOW! They better make a second season! That was the best, they did a pretty good job for their first season! :D   If they dont make a second season im going to die! After the last show for season one, I saw the ending, and I was like, “They have to do the second season!”

    I love Terra Nova and I hope they renew it. I don’t watch House, Fringe or Glee. But I’m sure the kids like those shows. That seems to be the group of people the networks want to make happy. Even thou older people watch TV and buy products more than the younger generation. So give Terra Nova another year or two to get it’s sea legs.

     I’d much rather watch Monday night football than a regular TV program that is on at the same time. But I have to admit that I enjoyed watching Terra Nova, when the game didn’t hold my interest. I was able to watch all the episodes I missed on Hulu. The show was a little slow at first, but I’d love to see the show continue. The plots have gotten better with each new episode. Let’s see another season and change the time slot to another night.

    Mr. Reilly.  Please renew Terra Nova.  Quite honestly it is one of only two to three network shows my family watches together.  Otherwise we all go to separate rooms and watch cable programming.  It is a GREAT show with lots of “legs”.  You could really make an awesome Season Two & beyond, if the show is allowed to.

    There’s so much good I could say about this show so.  I am hoping it will see a second season and even more. The cast is superb. The location is truly prehistoric. (Australia must truly be beautiful). Somehow it has the “essence” of many science fiction works both past and present. I won’t begin to expand on that. Some of you may laugh, but I desperately miss my 2 all time modern favorites…Lost and Battlestar Galactica. But I wonder if it is just my imagination or is character Jim Shannon a cross between Dr. Shephard on Lost and Professor John Robinson of Lost in Space with a little bit of sandmen Logan and Francis  of Logan’s Run…and the family is precious…seriously, I think someone is beginning to create the perfect science fiction show for the present generation! Something really healthy…Science Fiction Salad! I love the fact that it is family oriented. If the young people can watch and be inspired by this instead of all the silly child musical idols that suddenly turn from Shirley Temple into …well I can’t think of what…but given shows like this…I believe we can hope for a brighter future! Please keep Terra Nova!

    id like to see another season of terra nova,i watched the new alcatraz last week and was very disapionted,its a typical cops and robbers show that did not explain how these guys are timetraveling to the future,what gives?so we get to see that little blonde and her sidekick chase 1963 bad guys,wow thats original,come on fox give us another season of terra nova!

    Terra nova is a great show please don’t cancel it. I hate when a new show isn’t given a chance to develop. It is a great show but it is also new you have to give it a second season to grow. I know a lot of people who watch this show. You would be disappointing a lot of people. You can’t have it compete with House and other shows that have been around for a while now those shows have had there chance to grow and develop, you have to give this show a chance. It has a great original story.  Cancel Glee it was an alright show it did so well because of the meaning in it but isn’t it losing so many of it’s cast? We all got the message with the show now move on with that.

    Terra Nova is such a great show. It needs more publicity. I can’t believe how many of my friends don’t even know about it.  And, now, unfortunately, I can’t even tell them what day to watch it. Please bring it back. It’s one of the best shows out there.

    If Terra Nova was able to make money despite the ridiculously inconsistant scheduling, writer replacements, and various in-season changes in direction, just think how incredible it could be if FOX gives it a fairly decent time slot and a chance to solidify through well-written scripts and fewrer director discrepencies!  I love the fact that I can watch and discuss this show with all three of my sons (ages 15, 13, and 9).  Any show that facilitates parent/teen/pre-teen discussion and enjoyment is worth its weight in gold as far as I’m concerned.  Durthermore, I know we’re not the only family that has done research to answer various questions that the show’s topics have introduced.  All of that, plus a cast that brought the characters not only to life, but into our hearts in many situations, simply adds up to a winner-if given the chance.

    The DVR ranking is no surprise! It’s a great show at a bad time for people with young children. We love watching it, but it’s impossible to watch at 7 central — before the 4 year olds bedtime… Just too scary and violent for him!

    I`m a series addict & Terra Nova comes 1st on my list of best series ever. I really think it is in tune with the way things are going for our planet & also questions that we`re all wondering about in terms of humanity`s future.It sort of gives hope that we may have a chance somewhere that we do not know of yet.     The only thing that disappoints me about the show is the lack of dinosaurs.  That period was crawling with dinos of all size and shapes, but, to look at the show, you’d think they were as rare as pandas.

    Terra Nova is such a great show. There were a few lacking moments in season 1 but most certainly can be developed within a season 2 as I see so much potential for this show. I hope they won’t leave us hanging so bring Terra Nova back.

    It was so refreshing to see a family show, not all blood and guts cop show, or reality show about people with the IQ of a walnut.
    The characters in Terra Nova are real, and deep. We do not need more people like Snooki. Even survivor has turned into a soap opra, I used to love that show.

    PLEASE GIVE US MORE TERRA NOVA!!

    a great show with a great concept, in fact it could become a reality in the so not distant future, in that we are not very good stewards of our own terra firma. I know its TV ,but the price to pay for not being prudent in our own time may very well play out in the future, I think the show can survive in this setting, simply because it can become so surreal. I vote yes to a second season. As Jasom O’mara stated a little more of this and that will bring it into focus of what the show is intending to convey, many moral truths survive no matter what time line we happen to be in…

    All I can say is, I better see some sentient dinosaurs in season 2 (we all remember the highly literate Gorn, previous generation) — I suspect they’re the ones who did the chicken scratches on the slate above the water pools in the Forbidden Zone, not Lucas, who does not have the talons to streak slate. They’re figuring out the best chemistry for the trajectory of a life form to serve them on other planets, you know: mining, food service, chauffeurs. Lucas has allied with them by donating his DNA as a starter sample, and they gave him the cool eggtop computer. The first time one of those slashers opens its mouth in a British accent, that’ll be worth watching.

    God i hope that terra nova gets another series. me and my fiance always buy the series off of the xbox live. just to watch it over and over again. and just to be the first to watch the new episodes. one time it was 2 in the morning when a new episode came out on the xbox live and we watched it even thou i was already dead asleep. lol i love the show. have to have it. lol

    I like Terra Nova, I wouldn’t like it as much without Stephen Lang, he is great as the commander! House is awesome, I like the new line up and story it is an improvement over the last couple years, I hope Fox renews both!

    Second season of Terra Nova would be awesome, it started off so well then dropped off then picked up, my only gripe is that they are 85 million years in the past and there seems to be a lack of dinosaurs. My daughter loves it.

    Fringe too started off so well, it reminded me of the first few seasons of X Files, then it went weird with aliens, I feel Fringe is losing it’s way with alternate realities, it’s still an awesome series but I hope they don’t lose the plot

    As for house I’ve never watched it so can’t comment, the problem is that there are too many shows showing, we’ve just borrowed Dexter of a friend and are loving that series

    Please give us another season!  A great show!  A great family show with a very strong moral and ethical message.  It has interesting twists and turns and (Fox Decision Makers) please think how you could revitalize the image of the American family with a simple TV show!   Shows like Family Guy make me sick.  I’d almost given up hope on the American TV family.  However, Terra Nova has given me hope and something to watch with my family together (oh yes all together like a family in these busy crazy times)!!!  Bring it back for another season, please!

    Glee is one of the worse shows I’ve ever seen… I couldn’t sit through the first 10min. If anything should be canceled its Glee.

    House lost its appeal when they brought that extremely annoying and unattractive Asian girl on. Her acting ability is terrible. Now if they brought Olivia Wilde (“Thirteen”) back now that would be a show. Sorry to say, but her eyes just make me want to watch more.

    Terra Nova was a good show. The characters were portrayed well by the actors/actress. The story line was interesting. Overall It was good, and believe there should be another season just to see where the show can go..

    GET RID OF GLEE! Is what FOX should do.

    While I responded to this article 2 weeks ago, I do have a suggestion to add.  In response to the terrible time slot that posed many problems, including irratic airing, and therefore viewership, re-air the entire series in sequence now-instead of all of these Glee, House, and other shows that had a fair time-slot to begin with.  I lost all of my recordings of Terra Nova when my DVR went out and have been trying to rerecord the series, but have no idea when or if it’s on each week.  Also, there are many people whom I know who either heard about it too late or couldn’t figure out the scheduling after I recommended it to them.  They would love a chance to watch the entire first season, but are not being given the chance by the Execs who do scheduling at Fox.  It almost seems like someone in the scheduling department over there is working very hard to see that Terra Nova fails.  No offense, but really-Monday Night Football, Dancing with the Stars, various award shows and specials-what show could survive all of that?  And yet, Terra Nova not only survived, but made money to-boot!  This is a show that will not easily go into extinction despite all that’s been thrown in it’s way.  Let’s hope that the Top Execs take more than mere numbers into account when planning their roster.  Given the chance-and with a few tweaks-this show has the potential to rake in huge viewership, as well as profits.
    I also think they need to give season 1 another run so that others can see what many of you have already said.  Even if you’re not a Sci-Fi or Dino fan, this program will snag you and reel you in.  It’s so much more than most programs found in either genres-it really has something for everyone-especially families!  It’s entertainment and a great springboard for multi-topic discussions-but doesn’t try too hard-it doesn’t have to!
    Rise and shine FOX-You’re sitting on a potential Gold mine.

    Terra nova has not only become a show i think all the episodes were great! i really fell in love with the whole family and most of all the love story in it!!! i think the reason people didnt watch it was because it wasnt really known if there were more advertising it would get a lot more views hopefully there will be a second season but if theres not then i know a lot of fans will be disapointed

    Being a Fringe fanatic as I am, even I have to say it’s starting to get lame and hard to follow, How many dimensions are there now, 3? If it gets canceled i hope they give it a real good ending. On House, yeah, I watch it for the unique illnesses, but the doc himself, has gotten way over the top in egocentricity, and it’s just not fun anymore. Terra Nova we all loved I really hope it comes back! And Alcatraz – Bleh, they misrepresented the show from the beginning, so what we get a blazzay crime show with roughly another 300+ ppl to ‘come back to this time’ and at only 1 person per episode, getting bored rather quickly

    well i guess my opinion would be to cancell Glee and House as I think they have run their course.  Fringe, a bit weirder than usual this year and I hope it gets back on track as I enjoy the what if’s. Alcatraz and Terra Nova I enjoy and would like to see both of them at least for a couple of seasons.
    When I choose to watch shows, I want to be taken away to the mystery, supense and drama of something that is not in my world.  Let’s my mind think of different possibilities before I return to my life.  Love wins all and good always wins over bad and sometimes it really is just black and white. 
    I look forward to watching what the writers bring each season and if they are good, feel connected to the characters….like getting lost in a good book.

    FOX has a habit of cancelling great shows.  They better not cancel Terra Nova!  One of the best shows on tv!!!  They cancelled FireFly and that was a great show.  I hate Glee!!!  Alcatraz is also a good one too!  Come on executives at FOX, please bring Terra Nova!!!!!

    Sorry, but House had it’s run, the last couple of seasons are getting painful. Terra Nova has a great catch to it. I would like to see a moral side line commentary sort of like in Defying Gravity. It would be a nice tie in. Another improvement would be to see a better selection of Background music. Couple these with a fresh writing group and this will be a awsume series, not that it is not already. but a couple of well placed improvements and this will be a number one!

    I rather liked Terra Nova. It’s one of my favorite new TV shows. So, I hope it gets renewed for a second season. It’s gotten a lot of bad reviews from jaded Sci-fi viewers for being too family friendly but that’s why I like it. I’ve been a hardcore SF fan for most of my life and although TN doesn’t fit that profile it is entertaining and has a certain charm. But I do have my concerns as well. The plotlines have been slow moving, the writing somewhat too detective procedural (not enough emphasis on the FANTASTIC! elements that would set this show apart from the typical Syfy channel programming) and not enough exploring of the surrounding terra firma, especially the Badlands with its sketchy ancient artifact (the prow of a 19th century ship and presumably next season’s plotline ) and possible fracture back to the future . Also, sorry if I missed the logic behind this glaring problem, the Terra Novians were whisked back in time to the Cretaceous era (85 million years ago) where they might have a chance to save humanity, correct? But weren’t the dinosaurs and nearly all other creatures wiped out due to a world-wide catastrophe (an asteroid collision, for instance)? Wouldn’t they and their efforts die out as well making the entire enterprise fruitless?  Wouldn’t they be creating an alternate historical timeline or alternate Universe, that would change the future timeline, as it were if any of them were to survive such a catastrophe as a  ? That would open up so many story and plot possibilities to explore that the series might last for several seasons. As it is, it might barely last a few episodes when it returns if the writing staff doesn’t up the ante a notch or two by stimulating our imaginations with new and viable mysteries concerning the Earth’s possible pasts.

    i can not even BEGIN to tell you how much i would LOVE to have a second season of terra nova to watch. playing off of the season finale alone i can count at least 8 different angles they can take the story in. 

    I WANT…. scratch that… I DEMAND A SECOND SEASON!!!! if the guys at fox cant make it happen, im sure some other network would be happy to take over. BBCA would be a prime candidate for it. sure, the actors dont have brittish accents, but who cares? terra nova is just as awesome as both doctor who and torchwood. frankly, if given the option, i think BBCA would complete IDIOTS not take terra nova.

    I believe that Terra Nova could be to Fox what Walking Dead turned out to be for AMC.  The characters and plot could be developed for years, as long as they stop killing off major players.  (Think Star Trek, always a schmuck you never heard of getting pasted.)   Terra Nova started out great and just got better, how often do you see that?  I would even go for a different time slot if necessary, just keep it on please.

    Terra Nova is the best show I have seen in a long time. This is the only show that me and my husband enjoy and agree on. I hope that season 2 comes out soon if not on fox then at least another network. If they don’t bring season 2 soon there will be a lot of disagreement going on. PLEASE bring it it back.

    At first it was had to get into as i had not heard of the show. After the second show we were hooked. Great family show my son loves it and my Girlfriends son across the pond even took a shine to it. Why is it anything slated as a family show is shot well things like Jersey something exist. Seriously want to see more of the family programing thats why I dont watch network television any more. Reality tv is dead got over it.
